Vintage Filled Home

Hello, hello! Wow, it's been a hectic couple of weeks (and months) so I apologize for the sporadic posting. Is your May also very busy?

In the midst of crazy I've been scouring magazines for trend inspiration and I can't get enough of Catherine Hammerton's eclectic London apartment featured in Elle Decoration UK. The colors and vintage finds create a fun, welcoming and inspiring space. Some of my favorite elements include the red clock in the kitchen and vintage school book on her bedside table. Catherine Hammerton also creates beautiful wallpaper with vintage elements like old stamps, fabric and trim. I can see now where she gets all her wonderful inspiration!

Elements

Tradition and the future are fused together in the new and inspired collaboration between Danish designer Louise Campbell and Royal Copenhagen. The results are a complete tableware collection titled Elements, which "focuses on all the fine traditional qualities of the company whilst still gently pushing the boundaries." I love how the past is re-designed with lovely patterns and modern details.

Try your hand at combining old and new by experimenting with pieces like milk glass vases, embossed teacups and brass objects similar to the items available on Eddie Ross.

Picnic at Liberty

You've seen the pretty and quirky side of the Liberty Antique Festival and now it's time to wind down (or maybe up?) with a little vintage picnic. Bright colors, Bakelite and fond memories fill these beautiful picnic holders. The last trunk is the oldest of the bunch and was originally placed on the back of a car. Can you imagine? Also I'm slightly obsessed with the red and teal picnic ensemble...again, it's all about the teal!

I hope you enjoyed this April's round up of the Liberty Antique Festival - till September!

Quirky at Liberty

The Liberty Antique Festival always brings out the quirky vintage finds. This year inspired neat display ideas like bookshelves filled with colorful Hardy Boys or vintage toy sets and kite handles propped on tables. Of course, you can't go to Liberty without seeing an adorable retro bike! I also saw more crests, kitsch kitchen items and a variety of unusual vintage paintings. Up next...we take a little tour of picnic goodies at Liberty!

Pretty at Liberty

It's always hard to sum up the glory of the Liberty Antique Festival, but this year it was especially bittersweet. Not because of the vendors or array of vintage finds, but because Liberty was a special event my Mom and I shared and enjoyed. Even though her vibrant presence was truly missed, I still managed to enjoy the day and discover lovely vintage finds. I was also fortunate to have amazing friends eagerly awake at the crack of dawn, walk through the heat and join me in the vintage hunt. They really are the best and luckily they scored some goodies too!

I know my Mom was there in spirit and she would have been very excited to share these great finds with you. So, let's begin with a little taste of pretty goods like the re-purposed doctor stand, chic table lamps, pastel colored glasses and an abundance of vintage aprons. The teal...oh the teal on that doctor stand...paint anything teal-ish and I'm sold.

Stay tuned for more vintage finds from Liberty...

Vintage Medals & Crests

Vintage medals and crests are steadily becoming a popular and desirable trend. They are readily available at fleamarkets, but now vendors and buyers are carefully choosing how to display these items with vintage lithographs, graphic prints and decorative shadow boxes. Our interest may come from inheriting our grandparents' medals or research into family history...either way medals and crests can make a bold statement in your home. Envision a wall of framed medal lithographs paired with old photographs and placed near a shadow box containing military ribbons. You can also loosely pin medals next to your bedside table or in the middle of two framed black and white photographs. The look is regal, memorable and downright historic.

The above photographs were taken at the Raleigh, N.C. Fleamarket and many of the items featured are available online or contact through Derby House, which you may also know as FUNKIJUNK. Start your collection today and happy hunting!

Of Dreams and Memories

The new painting series “Of Dreams and Memories” by Susan Najarian beautifully incorporates original photographs from the 1920's, a vintage map and colorful balloon silhouettes. I enjoy how the focus is put on the photographs through the stark contrast of bright colors against open white space. This series also nicely fuses together Susan Najarian's love for encaustic painting and vintage hand crafted items. Wouldn't these paintings be a great way to display old photographs or create new dreams?

ShelterPop Tuesday: Vintage Handkerchiefs

Vintage State Handkerchiefs

Inspired by the framed handkerchiefs in the film Julie & Julia, ShelterPop discovered Lin's Antiques & Collectibles as the source to start your own vintage hankie collection. Snag a couple of state handkerchiefs, apply frames and ta-da...easy, conversational wall decor! I'm going crazy over the beautiful colors and fonts. The romper is adorable and it would also look great as wall art like these framed retro swimsuits!

Notice Me

The Notice Me project, created by Vahakn Matossian, is a series of guerrilla street signs with personal messages specific to their site. Found throughout London, the signs present loving and positive messages with authority like colors. The project is an, "attempt to plant a seed in peoples’ minds, that might grow with the other thoughts throughout the day." Beautiful and inspiring...

Inspiring Interiors: A Little Sussy

A Little Sussy is one of my favorite spots for photography inspiration and advice. The author, Nicole Hill Gerulat, is full of life and a talented photographer and teacher. Nicole recently posted photos of her adorable house which will also be featured in The Nest's spring issue. I love all the great accents like the photo wall, collection of hats and piles of fun Polaroids. Plus, the cake stands turned vintage camera displays are genius!
