I'm dusting off Please Sir and slowly returning to the blogosphere with new aspirations and inspiring ideas. I apologize for the long absence, but I needed a little transition time for my new job (yay!). I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. It's a bright new year and I'm feeling inspired by the distinct color palette and subject matter created by New Zealand artist Saskia Leek. These are just two examples of her work, but we can see that through color and abstraction a discernible subject, like the home, can take on many different perspectives. Leek's contrasting pieces encourage me to experiment and change up some of my own work and outlooks this year.

The Memory Project by Laura Konttinen is "a collection of reconstructed memories, built from, and into, photographs." Konttinen's work instantly drew me in because I can fully relate to those emotions and blurry bits of nostalgia found within our memories. I'm fascinated by the way Konttinen took a complex concept and put it into beautiful, tangible forms.

The Memory Project has also inspired my new year. As I draw closer to midnight it's only natural to reflect on last year's memories and feel a sense of renewal mixed with fear. I would normally want to evaluate, calculate, make lists and think of ways to improve...but just thinking about that makes me want to hide under last year's covers. This new year I'll try something different and let things go, listen more to my gut and remember the memories that make me...well me. In the holiday spirit, I transformed the Green Valley wreath one more time with vintage postcards, small clothespins, book pages and letterpress letters. I have a new appreciation for old Christmas postcards especially ones with wintry landscape scenes. They look so quaint and nostalgic! You can also easily personalize your wreath with family photographs or holiday cards to enjoy during the new year.

This time of year can be difficult, but I hope you take a moment and embrace the little joys this holiday season. One of my joys is a new tradition my family started which includes lighting a candle in honor of my Mom while we exchange gifts. The candle symbolizes her eternal love and presence during the holiday season and throughout the year. This comforting gesture means the world to me and is one of several new traditions I plan on carrying out for years to come. I would love to hear the holiday joys you are experiencing.

Hello, hello! I've been a little under the weather recently and all I want to do is hibernate inside the beautiful interiors by Dave Coote. I'm excited for Thanksgiving this week because there will be plenty of family, food, drinking and time off from work. All things I love! Plus, Dave and I are staying in a bed & breakfast for the holiday and it will be my first B&B experience. I can't wait! To curve my turkey cravings, I'm finding Thanksgiving inspiration from images filled with pops of orange, falling leaves and vintage hints. I also love the addition of teal colored pieces to your Fall table setting and wardrobe to break up the traditional orange and yellow color scheme.

I finally had the chance to photograph one of my vintage goodies purchased at the Metrolina - an old hand-painted sign from a hardware store. I believe the sign was never used because it was supposed to be cut down and folded to look like an over-sized seed packet. I'm glad they left it as is! I immediately feel in love with the sign's handmade quality, large scale, worn edges and beautiful colors. Plus, there was a bonus photo-op with my vintage wooden chairs and Brownie camera. On a styling note I originally placed the camera, a jacket and books on the chairs, but I felt like it was too cluttered and took away from the sign's focus. I'm slowly learning and experimenting and I hope you enjoy the end results! Here's to beautiful flowers in your home all year round...

After meeting Eddie Ross at the Charlotte Metrolina, my vintage eye was turned up a notch and I discovered a slew of unique objects and vendors. Like John Junk, owner of StellaGEORGE Designs, who creates functional tables from vintage signs. South Porch Antiques was another interesting booth filled with re-purposed antique elements like furniture, shelving and lovely mirrors. I love connecting with inspiring vendors - they are so friendly and a wealth of knowledge!

Besides meeting great vendors, there was also many drool-worthy vintage objects. I seriously regret not picking up those colorful bowls...aren't they adorable?! Speaking of purchases, I'll post shortly about the small goodies I brought back home...stay tuned!

Metrolina with Eddie Ross

The Metrolina Antique Show in Charlotte, N.C. is always a treat but this year was even more amazing because I had the pleasure to meet Eddie Ross, a former editor at Martha Stewart Living, contestant on Bravo's Top Design and lifestyle decorating extraordinaire. Eddie was charming, knowledgeable, passionate and all around fun. During the two hour fleamarket tour he provided insightful entertaining and design ideas on how to give old antiques an updated, fresh look. Here's a small glimpse inside the tour including tips from Eddie!

Eddie explained that you can find affordable antiques at fleamarkets - even cheaper than new products at major stores. See his short video here.

Look for vintage ribbons and buttons to add details to pillows, duvet covers, magnets, gifts and more!

Linens, linens and more linens! Linens are great to pair with modern dishware or bedding, frame as a headboard or use as cocktail napkins. Look for interesting details like monograms and color-inspired patterns. Got a small stain? Try dyeing linens with a fresh color!

Old prints make great wall art especially when framed with linen or burlap wrapped matting.

Beautiful susanis bring a colorful and exotic accent to any room.

As an avid fleamarketer, I was impressed by Eddie's knowledge and ideas on injecting new life into otherwise dated antiques. His tour also motivated me to think boarder in terms of purchasing and re-purposing vintage pieces. Eddie and I may have different styles, but it was truly inspiring to see and hear his design perspective. I also realized that no matter what your style or taste is...there is always an object, idea or inspiration to be found at the fleamarket. My passion and love for the hunt has grown even more!

From transistor radios to mid-century modern furniture, Atomic Warehouse has a huge selection of vintage goodies to delight your home. If you aren't lucky enough to live near their store in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (like me...I wish!) then browse their daily selection of merchandise for sale online. The color and furnishing ideas are endless and you may even discover desires you never knew you had...like a love for mod red fireplaces.

On a side note, I'm here...really I am! Things are sort of up, down and all over the place. I've been diving into work projects and focusing on the behind-the-scenes necessities for Please Sir. The High Point Furniture Market is in town, which means two things. One - I've had the pleasure of checking out the latest home trends and two - my feet are killing me! With so much great design to see it's easy to soldier through the pain, especially after viewing the unique art selection from Natural Curiosities by Christopher Wilcox. They have a team of over 15 artists and house a collection of over 60,000 images, textiles, textures, plants and other creative objects. Plus, their often large art pieces are "meticulously handmade in America and supported by the environmental vision that walks hand-in-hand with true art."

My favorite ideas ranged from over-sized sea patterns to small groups of sketches. I believe they exclusively sell to wholesalers, but one can still be inspired by their art and message!

Local Raleigh artist, Luke Miller Buchanan, creates paintings "focused on our man-made world." I love how he describes his work as,

"Stairways, telephone poles, railroad tracks, apartment buildings and factories are all prominent in my work. These are places and things that have been seen or used by thousands of people, each one of them an individual with unique experiences. These experiences, varied as they may be, share the same space. Therefore a street corner may be where one person met the love of their life, and also where someone lost theirs. A room in an apartment may be both where a child was conceived and where a young man died. These events are inseparable from the space, to the individual that experienced them."

The washed colors and disjointed perspectives add even more depth to the stories of these places. Doesn't he interpret and illustrate a place beautifully?

The self-conscious artist and awkward teenage girl inside me immediately respond to the work by Ali Cavanaugh. Even though I'm not a teenager, I feel like the contrast between colorful stripes and curious poses play on hidden emotions I faced as an adolescent and even now as an adult. Her site further explains that she "developed a process best described as neo fresco secco, where she applies watercolor to plaster panels; her figures often are accentuated by stark white negative spaces. Fascinated by the dichotomy of the seen and unseen in the human condition…body and soul…Cavanaugh’s art brings to light the complexity within contemplation. Her signature poetic titles are part of this engaging discourse."

On a side note, thank you for your warm and generous thoughts regarding my Mom's birthday. The day was not easy, but I found comfort in knowing that she would have loved the post and your comments. Thank you again for all the support and kindness.

Happy Birthday

Today my Mom would have turned a year older (or should I say a year younger). We would have had a nice Italian dinner complete with waiters loudly singing Happy Birthday and holding a yummy slice of chocolate cake or key lime pie. After blowing out the candles she would have opened gifts including the newest Fiestaware or her latest perfume obsession. We would have laughed, sipped our "fancy drinks" and talked about this week's vintage find. She would have also been embarrassed, yet secretly giddy, about her baby photograph being posted on Please Sir!

I miss my Mom so much, but I know she is having a wonderful birthday above. Happy Birthday Mom!

Liberty Antique Festival Fall 2010

Another fun (and very hot) Liberty Antique Festival brought booths filled with vintage goodies and delights. This year did not disappoint, but I did spot more novelty & decor items versus big ticket pieces. I also purchased a vintage Sterling fan in my favorite color and it actually works! Just Think

Hello, hello...yes, I am still here! I know it's been awhile, but I needed a little blogosphere break. Easing into the fall schedule hasn't been as easy as I had anticipated (I think my brain is still in summer). Plus, it feels like my visual mind is in sleep mode because all I want to do is think. Just think. Normally I'm like a sponge soaking up the visual world, but for the last couple of weeks all I've wanted to do is just be with my thoughts. Call it a visual vacation...call it musing...call it doing nothing. Either way, I needed the break. I've always been big on contemplation, but I found that after my Mom passed away is was easier to turn on the TV or get lost in something else instead of facing my thoughts. I'm slowly realizing it's important to embrace and be with those thoughts (good or bad) than to set them aside. It's painful, terrifying and empowering at the same time. How do you face your thoughts?

Thread. It's easy to forget how much thread, a basic and complex necessity, surrounds and assists our everyday life. I am continually fascinated by what thread does and how artists explore thread in their work. One such artist is Ali Naschke-Messing, who uses thread to create threadworks inspired by published text. She explains,

"These objects deal with the fragility and transience of language and interpretation. I collaborate with published authors, using fragments of their texts, sometimes in combination with my own, to create a new sculptured text that opens itself to the interpretation (and frustration) of each viewer. The fragments of Djuna Barnes, Ann Carson, Hafiz, Julia Kristeva, Lucy Lippard, and Jeannette Winterson (to name a few) have all entered and inspired work."

Ali Naschke-Messing combines literature and textiles to form a beautiful disarray of human emotion. I'm at a loss for words over how much I admire Ali Naschke-Messing's talent. Only to say that when I look at her work...my world and my heart stop a little...and that is truly something wonderful.

Camping is not at the top of my vacation destination list, but the Kolarbyn eco-logde in Sweden looks pretty amazing. Sunshine Lavender Farm

I recently had the pleasure to attend an event at the Sunshine Lavender Farm in Orange County, North Carolina. The sights were uplifting and the smells were beyond wonderful. My friends and I learned about planting lavender, created lavender wands and cooled off with delicious lavender ice cream and lavender lemonade (see recipe below!).

Lavender has many natural health benefits like easing headaches, aiding in sleep and providing overall stress relief. With all these uses you may want to invest in a small lavender farm (or plant) of your own. Lavender Lemonade Recipe:

Fill a tea ball with loose lavender florets, fresh or dried. Place tea ball in a quart pot of water to boil. Turn off heat and let steep 20 minutes. Use the "lavender tea" instead of water as you make your favorite lemonade recipe, either homemade or from a mix.

Hi there! I've missed you all and I'm back from a short blogging break (actually more like a so-busy-at-work-no-time-to-blog-sad-break). Hello, hello! I apologize for the recent sporadic posting here on Please Sir. This summer turned out to be busier than I anticipated and unfortunately real job responsibilities must come first. As much as I need a paycheck, I also continue to think about the quote above created by the talented (and super sweet) Suzanne Cabrera from an open [sketch]book. There must be truth in it, and I think Suzanne and I are determined to find it. I want to get my design groove back and start to create from within. As many of you know, it's so easy to get caught up in ruts and lose your creative focus. My hope is to find peace, truth and happiness along the way.

Be inspired and try these key features in your home like:

Working exclusively in 19th century processes, Dan Estabrook produces intimate, yet compelling photographs that illustrate the beauty of long forgotten methods. The Anthropy Arts Photographer Series beautifully documents Estabrook's design process and evocative salt prints, which explore personal issues such as love, sex and death. The final results are more than photographic prints, but highly personal and engaging objects.

I find his work truly inspiring because there is a deep connection between his subject matter and photography process. Estabrook says, "I want to make it not so that my work is interesting printed in another method, but that it wouldn't make any sense at all if it were printed in another method." I'm such a want-to-try-everything personality, so it's refreshing to see a current photographer thrive in a specific medium such as historical photography printing. Estabrook understands what works for his vision, and that in itself is a talent that takes many artists years to accomplish.

Ethnic Finale: South America

Over the last two weeks we've explored ethnic fabrics and accents, and before our journey comes to an end I want to share with you where my ethnic curiosity started...South America. Several years ago my friend and I took a month long trip to Peru and Bolivia. Two blond-haired gringas in a foreign country filled with history, textiles and a little danger...yeah, it was pretty damn amazing. I came back with piles of fabrics, a TON of photographs and a new appreciation on life. I still have wondrous thoughts about my trip, and I hope you too can find ethnic and living inspiration in the selected photographs below...

From the vibrant color combinations and textural patterns...

From the culture and people we embraced. By the way, the boat was completely made of reeds (including the islands!). Don't you want a rolled reed bench now?

Last week we explored exotic sites for ethnic inspired ideas, and I would like to continue our journey with more objects and spaces using ethnic accents. As I mentioned before, the key to incorporating ethnic style in your home is through a moderate use of accessories. As you can see from the examples above the ethnic touches are simple, yet still bring a sense of warmth and comfort to the space. Plus, you don't have to go to faraway lands to find unique pieces (unless you want to of course!). Small furniture, blankets and objects can be found through the web or even at a local shop or fleamarket. Find the perfect piece that adds another layer to your story.

If you're a daily reader of Please Sir you know I tend to like retro-modern-cozy spaces (or I'm all over the place!), but I see the potential for ethnic touches in an interior for conversation and comfort. Let's go in a different direction this week and explore the possibilities of ethnic inspiration. Anthropologie is a great start because they always have a fresh take on using ethnic influence in fashion and home without going overboard. I think that's the key...ethnic is a great look, but in moderation. Pack your bags for a little sightseeing!

Lauren DiCioccio's hand-embroidered, sculptural art is highly detailed, realistic and downright amazing. I'm speechless over her beautiful pieces and refer to DiCioccio's artist statement, which nicely sums up her current body of work:

My work investigates the physical/tangible beauty of commonplace mass-produced media-objects, most recently: the newspaper, magazines, office papers and writing pads, plastic bags, 35 mm slides. These media are becoming obsolete, replaced by the invisible efficiency of various technologies. In some cases, this transition is a good thing- faster transmission and distribution of information, streamlined systems, openness to user input, less waste. But a hole is left behind by the disappearance of these everyday objects. What will happen when we no longer touch information? When newsprint does not rub off onto our fingertips? When we no longer write longhand? The tedious handiwork and obsessive care I employ to create my work aims to remind the viewer of these simple but intimate pieces of everyday life and to provoke a pang of nostalgia for the familiar physicality of these objects.

I'm always impressed when an artist utilizes a medium like embroidery and turns it into a thought provoking message. These awe-inspiring pieces created with thread, fabric and determination make us question many of the uncommon and ordinary objects we encounter each day. What is the future for these objects and the impressions they leave behind?

I'm slowly building my own paint-by-numbers collection starting with this beautiful ship. Gleefully placed on my mantel I look at the painting each day and enjoy the rich colors and obsess about my own future collection. Seaside living meets Danish modernist in the home of photographers Amy and Joe Keller. Their South Shore, Boston cottage is the perfect balance of vintage and modern style with antiques, souvenirs and mid-20th-century furniture. Tongue-and-grove ceilings, pale wood floors and colorful vintage collections create a nostalgic feel in the Keller's new home. A Wise Woman

The quote has been in my thoughts throughout Mother's Day as I remembered my Mom and all the joys and sacrifices she made for our family. My Mom truly embodied this beautiful quote because she was a special, wise woman who continually built her home and family with strength and love. She will always be loved and never forgotten for all the things she has done for our family. In the midst of crazy I've been scouring magazines for trend inspiration and I can't get enough of Catherine Hammerton's eclectic London apartment featured in Elle Decoration UK. The colors and vintage finds create a fun, welcoming and inspiring space. Some of my favorite elements include the red clock in the kitchen and vintage school book on her bedside table. Catherine Hammerton also creates beautiful wallpaper with vintage elements like old stamps, fabric and trim. I can see now where she gets all her wonderful inspiration!

The results are a complete tableware collection titled Elements, which "focuses on all the fine traditional qualities of the company whilst still gently pushing the boundaries." I love how the past is re-designed with lovely patterns and modern details.

It's always hard to sum up the glory of the Liberty Antique Festival, but this year it was especially bittersweet. Not because of the vendors or array of vintage finds, but because Liberty was a special event my Mom and I shared and enjoyed. Even though her vibrant presence was truly missed, I still managed to enjoy the day and discover lovely vintage finds. I was also fortunate to have amazing friends eagerly awake at the crack of dawn, walk through the heat and join me in the vintage hunt. They really are the best and luckily they scored some goodies too!

I know my Mom was there in spirit and she would have been very excited to share these great finds with you. So, let's begin with a little taste of pretty goods like the re-purposed doctor stand, chic table lamps, pastel colored glasses and an abundance of vintage aprons. The teal...oh the teal on that doctor stand...paint anything teal-ish and I'm sold.

Cluster Balloon Launch

On Saturday I had the pleasure to watch North Carolina pilot Jonathan Trappe fly to the sky in his specialized cluster-balloon chair consisting of 40 giant helium-filled balloons. The scene was amazing as colorful, over-sized balloons were filled and preparations were made for take off. Trappe silently floated away from Sanford Regional Airport mid-afternoon and landed safely Sunday morning after traveling 70 miles and reaching a high altitude of 7,000 feet. Luckily Trappe knows his way around cluster balloons after several flights including a promotional tour for the Pixar movie Up. He also has plans for a cluster-balloon crossing of the English Channel in May or June.

**UPDATE** Jonathan Trappe e-mailed me and said The Spirit Cluster actually "went up to about 7,500 feet on the flight, and covered a track-over-the-ground of 109 miles." He also went on to say, "It was my first flight to cross from day into night, and then survive the night and return into the daylight again. The dawn was so welcome; it had dipped into the 30's aloft, and the return of the warmth was very welcome." Such an amazing feat!

A New Kitchen with Fond Memories

Built in 1953 this charming yellow kitchen is full of old memories. In over a year a young couple, Merethe Bright and Tore Dahle, remodeled the cottage with modern updates like new paint and hardware. Originally owned by Merethe's grandmother and grandfather, the house is still furnished with sweet memories of her childhood. Like the vintage radio, which played her grandparent's favorite songs, and the blue stools she used to sit on during lunch with her grandparents. I love this kitchen because it's filled with sunshine yellow, modern elements, vintage appeal and an adorable history.

FUNKIJUNK

While browsing through the Raleigh, NC Fairground Fleamarket over the weekend I happened upon one of the most exciting vendors called FUNKIJUNK. I also had to the pleasure to meet Mike and Christianne Moyers, the adorable and sweet couple behind FUNKIJUNK. Throughout the year they sell their amazing selection of vintage finds at various antique shows and online through Etsy and Ebay. When they aren't set-up at shows you can find them in a little condo inside an 1840's cotton mill in Concord, North Carolina. How cute, right?

I love their selection of goods like colorful books, a teal pie holder, a retro clock, old coin purses and an assortment of vintage jewelry. They also had a variety of old lithographs that I can't get enough of. Cow lithograph - yes! Gemstone lithograph - even better! Mineral lithograph - already bought it (sitting pretty on my bedside table)! If you are interested in any of these items or to find out more please visit them online.

Colorful Vintage Finds

The Easter weekend started off nice with a visit to the International Collectibles & Antiques Show in Charlotte, North Carolina. The weather was beautiful, the vendors were excited and the rows were chock full of vintage items. The always popular and colorful lamps were on display along with Bakelite animal napkin rings, a tandem bike, vibrant glassware, an adorable camper and vintage kitchenware. I didn't purchase anything at the show (although those napkin rings were tempting), but overall it was an inspiring event for bright colors. Stay tuned because the weekend didn't stop there...more vintage finds coming up next!

The Art of Business

If you've been following Please Sir on Twitter, you may have noticed several tweets about the Southern Entrepreneurship in the Arts Conference. On Saturday, the one day event was filled with interesting speakers and motivating concepts for any type of entrepreneurial artist. William Mangum, an acclaimed watercolorist and gallery owner, shared his view on the art of business and what it means to be an entrepreneur.

He referred to the "Art of Business" as:

A - Alliance: seeing what is possible with other people, corporations and causes
R - Resourcefulness: connecting the dots to make a vision into reality
T - Tenacity: having the fire to get started and stay motivated

Mangum also said an entrepreneur:

1. Dreams big
2. Takes risks
3. Never rests on their laurels
4. Constantly raises the bar
5. Creates value and carves out a niche
6. Exploits and identifies market opportunities

I thought Mangum's experience and points were valued for anyone working to find their way, develop a business or build on an already successful brand. This list may come in handy when you are stuck in an entrepreneurial rut, need a reminder of why you do the crazy (yet rewarding) things you do and to know you are not alone!

We saw lots of vintage goodness at The Depot at Gibson Mill yesterday, but we can't forget about all the kitchen accessories. Discover tons of color with vintage thermoses, dishes, car hop trays, pepper shakers and a cake pie carrier. My favorite ideas included a vintage toothpick holder and a wine rack filled with old rolling pins. The toothpick holder would be an adorable detail for a kitchen wall or table. And what to do with empty wine racks (besides don't tell where the wine went)? Fill them with vintage rolling pins! Love, love, love.

This weekend I had the pleasure to visit The Depot at Gibson Mill in Concord, NC. Originally a textile mill, the space was recently converted into an amazing 88,000 square foot indoor antique mall. Above is a glimpse into this vintage playground filled with shabby chic accessories, vintage clocks, adorable vanity tables, post office shelving, small and big chalkboards, funky lawn furniture and a neat book stand. These are just a few of my favorite items...stay turned for a peek into their selection of vintage kitchen accessories. And if you're in the area I highly recommend you plan a visit!

On March 10th my sister, Jennifer, had a beautiful and healthy baby girl. Her name is Laura and she is a bundle of adorableness! Mie Kongo Studio creates hand-made porcelain cups that are lovely and functional. The cup part is designed by Mie Kongo and the handles are vintage molds. An extensive process is used to go from the original and larger vintage piece to the size needed for the cup. Here's a great example...Mie Kongo says, "the cardinal bird was originally about 6" long. The porcelain slip shrinks 16%, and after the process of casting of casting of casting...11 times, it shrunk down to this size." Check out the amazing progression by clicking here. Sorry for the light posting this week, but I've been swamped with real work duties. Not fun, but necessary to pay the bills. Do you know what is fun?! This chalkboard painted piano created by Heather from The Modern Hive. I discovered the neat idea from My Happy Little Life where Kelly recommended using the chalkboard area to write song assignments and keep track of practice times.
