Studying and practicing textile methods like hand weaving, knitting, and screen-printing has expanded my appreciation for textile history. Even though I'm no longer in school I still want to learn about design and textiles...I feel like a lifelong student!
I recently discovered the Zucchi Collection, which is a collection of 56,000 wood and pewter, antique printing blocks formerly used for the production of hand-printed fabrics. The website offers a brief history, demonstration on building a hand-block and printing on fabric, and a glimpse into their collection. Below are highlights from the collection with the original block and final fabric produced using the block.
I'm amazed by the detail - can you imagine the patience needed? The exhibiton is housed in Milan, but for a virtual experience check out the Zucchi Web Collection.

Thanks fiesta lady - we always need a good history lesson!
Great post. I have some old blocks from India that I love.
I would love to be able to do some block printing like Galbraith and Paul. They have a great studio, check them out.
