Hungarian Grain Sacks

While in Liberty I discovered Hungarian grain sacks...and I seriously regret not buying them after seeing all their modern uses. The sacks are hand woven with durable flax/hemp linen, and feel much softer than the burlap sacks found in United States. The varying stripes indicate which mills they came from giving the sacks history and character. Pictured above are two grain sacks in their original form, and they can be purchased on ebay through seller loodylady.

If you like the look of these grain sacks, but don't want to deal with sewing there are several companies that sell the antique linens as pillows, bags and more. The London based design company MFV 53 has a variety of handmade pillows and aprons. The stylish cushions can also be used indoors and outdoors. I love the navel ribbon cushions (top right), which are adorned with vintage military & naval medal bars and ribbons. Clever!

Beyond France Ltd. also sells a diverse selection of items made with vintage grain sacks. Such items include vintage fabric bags, bolster pillow covers, upholstery linen ideas, stair runners, and window coverings. They also sell grain sacks individually including the monogrammed linens.

These sacks are fantastic...UGH...regrets...but maybe next time!

I just got one of these sacks, blue stripe at The Great British Pine Mine in Kensington Md for $48. I am not associated with the store in any way, just passing along information. The twill weave is like burlap in texture. I am going to use it to upholster a chair. Love that rough look.
