Although an older show, the Sole to Soul Exhibit by artist Willie Cole is a wonderful treat for the creative mind. Featured at the Alexander and Bonin gallery, the exhibit used high-heeled shoes to tell an evolving story from beauty and sex to nature and tantric spirituality.
The gallery says, "In Sole to Soul, the shoes are formed into circles expressing the concept of lotus blossoms which die and flower again. The styles and colors of the shoes dictate the form; the blossoms range in diameter from 4 to 7 feet."
Willie Cole's art is about acts of transformation and transcendence. I can see how this work illustrates the idea of "transformation", and his manipulation of found materials is amazing.

Sole to Soul
Check out more Willie Cole. Also, doesn't it reference back a little to the Crinoline Flowers? Maybe it's the circular form of both works.

I LOVE shoes too...what a wonderful display!
these are GREAT!!
I did think of the crinoline shots you posted when I saw the first image. Beautiful! And from shoes!
I'm glad someone else thought the same thing - they are still different...but the circle motif makes them seem similar.

hmmmm....wonder if I could make my shoes do this? Probably not...
