The Art of Cabinets

Many people own a piece of furniture they love...maybe a grandmother's dresser or a vintage table full of history. But, there are few that can say they create their own furniture, not only with a story, but also with a purpose. The cabinets by Sarah Martin do just that and more.

Part of Martin's artist statement reads, "Cabinets are a deeply personal furniture form. Their interior spaces can conceal as well store, they can set things apart as special as well as keep safe. In my work, cabinet interiors are treated as secret, special places, full of surprising details and extravagant materials. The cabinets house another reality, protected and kept separate from the outside world. In creating these spaces, I’m transforming otherwise mundane storage spaces into places that should be considered."

A wonderful idea to transform mundane areas into surprising places, like adding wallpaper to the inside of a closet or night stand drawer. I'm amazed with these pieces because they are functional, beautiful art works.

Titled Egg made with bleached and whitewashed mahogany, padauk, vintage kimono fabric, and 23k gold leaf.

Titled The Collector made with salvaged clock case and shutter louvers, copper, pine, plaster, wax, flies and insects.

i like the light and airiness of the first one; that pop of the kimono + gold leaf is stunning.

I love that vintage kimono fabric used in the interior of the cabinet. It makes the piece really special.

Goodness, that top cabinet is gorgeous, and the thought process behind her designs is pretty marvelous, too.

OMG!!! I love them both!! It's such a great idea too... If people can't afford to buy a whole new cabinet they can always add some really pretty vintage wallpaper like they did in the first pic!!
