Abandoned Interiors

Whenever I pass an old, abandoned house or warehouse I am always tempted to take a peek inside. All these questions race through my head - What does the interior look like? What did the previous owners leave behind? What kind of history has this place seen? How can I get inside to take a photograph?!

Luckily there is Location Works, an online library of locations for movies, magazines, advertisements, and events. They have a whole section devoted to derelict locations to cure my trespassing desires. Oh those paint chipped walls and hardwood floors - how fun to be at a photo shoot or party in one of these. Watch out...don't fall through the floor!

I love abandoned places - http://www.flickr.com/photos/jutheim/1492989828/in/set-72157604261546102/ - but I am always scared to go inside.

You know, while these are sort of sad, there really is beauty everywhere. My husband and I went inside a house that was probably 300 years old and abandoned and in shambles. It had amazing paneling, old brick beehive fireplaces, and stunning wide pine floors. It made me so sad and I hope that someone buys it and restores it to it's old glory. (Needless to say...I was totally creeped out. Definitely had a spooky vibe going on...haha)

Oh how fantastic! I love imagining what went on in abandoned spaces...who was there, what they did. A friend in college shot a photo essay on abandoned churches in Mexico. Gorgeous and haunting. Love this!

Well, thanks to your link I will never get anything done again. Ever. It is totally addictive house porn. Click on Lofts. Or Gardens. Or Living Rooms. I wish I was a film director and had a script that needed filming, just so I could go on location scouting tours and live vicariously.

After reading this post and checking out that website (Location Works), I've decided I missed my calling--I should've been a location scout. How fun would that be? :-)

Love these photos--they're hauntingly beautiful. Thanks for pointing us to the website! -Julia

I totally know what you mean! I feel the same way. I love thinking about the history of the place. I sometimes watch that show "If Walls Could Talk" on HGTV and am amazed at some of the things people find that were left behind.

Years ago I used to go to "underground" nightclubs in abandoned buildings... some were cool... some were scary and I prayed for no earthquakes!

i meant to comment earlier, but i got distracted.

i wanted to say that this is beautiful. i sometimes get tired of seeing super pristine, modern ikea-like things all the time, and it's refreshing to see something old and rotting and destroyed. and i have a special place in my heart for those things.

when i was in college, we broke into this old abandoned flour mill in downtown, and it was supposedly going to be torn down for something else, like some new hotel or whatever. and when we went inside, despite the litter rotting carcasses of pigeons and bird waste, it was gorgeous--everything from the decaying, moldy walls to the rusty fixtures to the wooden lifts. absolutely stunning. and it breaks my heart whenever something like this is torn down instead of preserved. it really does. so it's really nice when someone who has a great eye such as yourself posts about old things.

oh, and that old mill had a HUGE hole in the 2nd floor which i almost fell in because i wasn't looking!

anyway, "old" is my new "new" :)

sorry for the long comment :P

Oh my!!! I'm so right there with you...I'm constantly finding sites like this on the web and get lost for hours looking at the photos! There is something so hauntingly beautiful about an abandoned place...especially if it still has remnants of it's past life hanging around. I've been contemplating doing a Friday Flickr Find on abandoned interiors and this makes me want to do it even more!! Thanks for the inspiration :)

I'm back already. I just checked out location works. I'm sorry to report that I won't be reading your blog anymore, or any others. I just don't think I have the time since I will be spending ALL of my time looking at their site. SO addicting. Try "libraries", "wine cellar", "garden"...ooh! I'm off to try "butler's pantry".
