Art in Science

The natural world offers a plethora of inspiration and ideas. The pebble etchings by Fiona Watson are great examples of mixing science, art and nature. Watson is fascinated by the patterns and forms in nature, which led her to study Biological Sciences at Leicester University. After several years of working for various medical journals, Watson eventually studied printmaking to create a perfect blend of science and art.

I can relate to her two passions. I love when art meshes with different disciplines, and my favorite combination is science and art. Before going forward with my art and textiles degree I debated about pursuing biological sciences. I may have gotten paid better, but I would have messed up the math and experiments! I'll stick with creating my own art experiments, but the science world is still very fascinating to me. I would love to sit in on a biology class...just to listen and be inspired.

Ooh I am a scientist by training but in molecular genetics. When you get down to that level it still is exquisitely beautiful. I was so passionate about it in my training. I hear you! A-M xx

Oooh! I love the last image! I studied bio in college and I day didn't go by where I didn't see something in my scope and imagine it as something else that would look gorgeous as a piece of art. I think science and art are two sides of the same coin.

i love nature...but never a big fan of science classes. they hurt my head. take a picture of a bug, sure. dissect it, nah....

Oh wow! The stones are gorgeous. My LM wants to be a geologist and has quite the collection herself. I'm sure she would love to have a necklace with those one day!

A scientific designer! COOL!
These works of art remind me of stone massages... though I've never had one.
We've learned more about you today!

I love the stones... have you heard about the World Beach Project? It's where people make designs with stones from different beaches around the world. It's a project of the V&A museum in London.

My ex-housemate from Wales and his kids, and I each did it from 3200 miles apart.

Lots of people did beautiful things with stones like these.

Lovely post. I feel your words as I get a lot of my inspiration from what fascinate me in nature and science. Its unknown and complex aspect is really appealing to me, and that's what I'm trying to show in some of my works. :)

These remind me of when I lived on Cape Cod. My porch had a lot of the same types of rocks, just not so artfully arranged.
