Crush

I have a crush on the photographs by Sam Falls. The lighting and subjects are quite compelling. I enjoy photography and recently it's something I've been digging into and even slightly obsessing over. I'm so curious about the process - the cameras, the lighting effects, and the post-production techniques. It's photo madness in my brain! My concern is finding my own style of photography. There seems to be many approaches like a romantic and dreamy look to a realistic and raw style. After soaking in the work of other amazing photographers...where do you find your place?

Those are absolutely wonderful photographs.
I sometimes feel the same way looking at other artists, as to your question of 'where do you find your place'. So for me, I need to know when to stop looking and just work. Then when my art tank runs out I take a break a look around again. :)

although i'm not a great photographer, i find myself in the same place—trying to figure out what my style is. every time i see a different style of another great photographer, i think, "ooooh . . . i wish is could take those kind of photos." i guess it's ever-changing for me.

sam's photos are beautiful because they have 'soul'. they're more than just objects.

i'm a newbie photographer and look at a lot of styles. i also like a lot of styles. in the end, i go with what comes naturally to me. for now, i want to learn how to technically take a good photo first, while starting to think about adding my own essence, which should make a tea cup more than just an object. i expect it to take a long time.

i'm reading a really wonderful book about the art of photography called 'letting go of the camera' by brooks jensen. i saw the book mentioned on shutter sisters. it's helping me realize quite a bit. like, there's a hell of a lot that goes on in the dark room, so it's probably ok if some alterations are made in photoshop, too.

sorry to ramble ...

I've been taking pictures for over 20 years... and I still haven't nailed a particular style. I often find myself doing the same thing over and over, but I don't really equate it with intention- or even instinct. I believe it's habit. I think when a person has passion, it shows.

hmm...good question. I think you find your voice by experimenting and eventually you start to find ways of working that become a part of you. Then you must challenge it and keep pushing your own limits so you don;t get bored!
Keep inspiring yourself with photographers you respect I say!

Really fabulous work. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you for sharing these. They are so beautiful. I especially love the horse.

I think you find your style by taking/manipulating pictures. Overtime, with practice, and inspiration such as these photos you just shared, your own voice will start to be heard through your work too.

it's hard to "find your place". i am an art major, fine arts: painting and i once had a young painting professor tell us that it's extemely hard to be original these days, that so many ideas are taken. but i disagree, as long as every single human being is original and unique then so too will their art be. although you will be influenced by other artists, which is normal and almost needed, your work will be yours because you are the only you! so just begin.

A perfectly fine thing to be obsessed with I think

These are lovely. Thank you.

I haven't found my place yet, I don't think. Every photograph seems to speak something different to me. I have a hard time just 'sticking' with one style or expression.

I just love soaking up portfolios and can't wait to explore this one. Photography for me is like when you say the same word over and over again until it sounds like gibberish---the more I think of it, the more overwhelmed I get by how incredibly miraculous it is that we can capture the world around us using only the properties of light...and don't even get me started on digital photography---it was complicated enough when it was just chemicals on paper!

It's so hard to say. I find inspiration all around me. Also, get caught up in exploring various trends and techniques. Although it is important to have a well defined style, we must remember to never stop learning, growing, and experimenting.....stay fresh. Thank you for sharing these beautiful images!!
