Stephen Kent

Clouds. They are becoming widely popular through talented artists and photographers, but ceramist Stephen Kent takes a different approach to the much loved motif. One such piece is his green cloud ceramic bookends featured in this month's American Craft. The author of the essay, Akiko Busch, describes them as,

"billowing across the shelf or mantle where the books themselves are meant to be. Rather than serving as a structure to support the books, they occupy the space that is traditionally meant for them. And in doing so, the bookends suggest the weight of unread books: what we have not yet studied and do not yet know takes up its own space. In an odd way, the green cloud is a study of absence as an object itself."

Who would of thought green clouds could be so stunning and provocative? I'm simply in awe over Kent's work and look forward to his future pieces.
